The South Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is one of Melbourne's oldest community orchestras, with a
continuous record of performing in the South Melbourne Town Hall since its formation in 1946.
Four concerts a year are performed in the Town Hall which - through the generosity of the City of Port
Phillip and the Australian National Academy of Music - the orchestra has the use of for both rehearsals and
concerts. Built late in the 19th century, this magnificent old building - now fully restored - has acoustic
properties as good as can be found anywhere in Australia. The orchestra performs works in a variety of
styles, from the pre-baroque works of Gabrieli, through the standard Baroque, Classical and Romantic
repertoire into the modern era and frequently engages concerto soloists from the Academy.
